Architecture as a Form of Expression
I examined how social constructs are reflected in architecture throughout history and across civilizations and geography by conducting independent research into distinct cultures including isolated social groups. For each social construct, I determined what was important for me to share and express, and then designed 3D renderings and animations to demonstrate how different constructs are incorporated into buildings, with a focus on: aesthetics • function • materials • importance to community • structure • suitability • usage • and viability to meet modern needs.
I created the designs using Blendr, a 3D-rendering software that allowed me to digitally-sculpt each structure. I then animated the renderings to create short 360° videos for each structure.
I am creating a gallery featuring high-quality renders and descriptions. The existing animations move fairly quickly, and the new ones will be better-paced. The renders require significant computer power so my faculty-advisor and I are working on plans to ensure we have the technology and resources to achieve the quality to ensure viewers can see each element. After rendering, we will create a gallery on a school hallway that is lined with currently inactive flatscreen monitors.
